S4 Energy selected for support in EU funding application

TUE 23 MAY 17

S4 Energy has been selected by the GetFunded 010 initiative for specialist help in applying for European funding. As one of a highly select group of successful applicants, it puts S4 Energy in a real position of advantage, boosting the further development of its innovative energy storage concepts.

The European Horizon 2020 programme funds high-potential innovation through a dedicated SME instrument with a total budget of EUR 3 billion over the period 2014-2020. Competition for this funding is severe: less than 10% of all applications, which are submitted throughout the EU, are honoured.

The City of Rotterdam aims to increase the number of successful Rotterdam applicants through the GetFunded 010 initiative. Professional grant consultants have selected the eight best entries (from almost 100 applications) and will support the companies involved in preparing their application.

S4 Energy has been selected for a phase 2 application (technical and business development), in which category grants of up to EUR 2.5 million are available. "We're very happy to have been selected", says Peter Teerlink. "It's a sign of recognition of the enormous potential of our KINEXT flywheel technology, both for renewable energy generation, grid balancing and improved power quality."

The KINEXT storage unit allows substantial amounts of energy to be stored at very high efficiency rates, with a high power-to-energy ratio and with an exceptionally short response time. Currently, the technology is being used to create an ultra-fast operating reserve on the national transmission grid, allowing TenneT TSO to successfully manage the growing amount of decentralised renewable energy sources.
