Almelo Storage

Next to our manufacturing facility in Almelo in the eastern part of the Netherlands, we built our first hybrid energy storage project.

What it is

The project consists of a battery system with a power of 9 MW, capacity of 7,2 MWh and 6 KINEXT flywheels with a power of 3 MW.

What it does

It provides essential services to TenneT allowing them to maintain the frequency of the grid. The combination of the battery system with the fast-response flywheels reduces the energy throughput and number of cycles of the Li-ion batteries. This ensures an improved usage profile and longer system lifetime.

Why it’s important

This facility helps improve the reliability of the national grid, protecting it against fluctuations caused by the imbalance between supply and demand.

We provide Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) and automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (FRR) services to TenneT, the Dutch Transmission System Operator (TSO).

S4 Energy owns and operates this energy storage system.

This facility has been in operation since 2018 and is supported by Energiefonds Overijssel.
